new holland brewery “the poet” oatmeal stout

I saved this one just for Halloween. What’s Halloween without a little Edgar Allen Poe? This beer, which is features a raven silhouetted by a full moon on the label, is perfect for a night like tonight. It’s dark brown, opaque, and has a thick tan head that leaves “lace” on the side of the glass. The aroma is both roasty and sweet.
The flavor is of roasted malt with some coffee notes and a little sweetness, too. There is little to no noticeable hop flavor, and then more coffee in the aftertaste. Very malty and smooth. As it warms, it becomes even sweeter with an almost raisin-like flavor.
New Holland also makes a fall seasonal called Ichabod Pumpkin Ale. It wasn’t available when I was in Michigan in August, but I’m thinking about making the seven-hour drive to get some.
